How the Most Natural Mosquito Repellent Got Discovered

The Science

The light source in the triLED™ Technology lights is not a novelty. Actually, the colour of the light has already been used in the medical world for calming purposes, more specifically, to treat schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. However, it has never been used to repel mosquitoes!

The special lamp emits a bright yellow light, which is used to shield LTV radiation. Once turned on, the yellow emission has the effect of moving away the mosquitoes from the illuminated space.

The Test

In order to determine the effectiveness of this mosquito repellent light bulb, tests were carried out in a small environment (within 2 measuring cabins 8'x8'x20').

Given that mosquitoes do not typically fly in bunches, their behaviour is significantly altered towards a more aggressive state as they are in packs within an enclosed space. In order to determine the efficiency of the mosquito repellent light, tests were carried on two separate booths. As shown on the picture, one booth was illuminated with a regular incandescent light while the other was illuminated with the triLED™ Technology light bulb.

The mosquito population was estimated using Bare Leg Catch (BLC) techniques. BLC was conducted at both sites simultaneously for 4 hours.

N.B.: The mosquitoes collected in this study were exclusively those of the Culex quinquefasciatus and Aedes albopictus species, responsible for the spread of infectious diseases.

The Conclusion

At the end of the experiment, a considerable reduction in the population of Culex quinquefasciatus mosquitoes was recorded in the repellent light cabin compared to the untreated cabin.

The lamp used in this study exerted a repellent effect against mosquitoes, especially of the Culex quinquefasciatus species.
